Congresswoman Proposes Sugar Tax on Beverages

Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has introduced a bill to tax sugar-sweetened beverages. Called the SWEET Act, the bill would impose a 1 cent federal tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener, such as sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, that is put into beverages. DeLauro says the bill is to help tackle the dual epidemic of obesity and diabetes in our nation. "We are at a crucial tipping point and the SWEET Act will help correct the path we are currently on," she said. (wsfb.com, Hartford, CT)
